D.C.’s labor laws outline several regulations specific to the region, including minimum wage, overtime pay, and premium pay for split shifts separated by an hour or more.

Here are the labor compliance requirements of these ordinances. Employers must:

  • Pay employees a “split shift premium” for split shifts equal to one hour of pay equal to the minimum wage when two shifts are scheduled in one day with more than 60 minutes in between.
  • Provide employees overtime pay equal to 1½ times their regular hourly pay if hours worked exceed 40 hours per week.
