Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about 7shifts Tip Management

  • If you want to set up an automated tip pool (where tips are distributed based on a percentage of collected tips or net sales), you’ll need to use Toast, TouchBistro, Square, Revel, or GoTab POS.

    For non-automated tip pools, you can create them with any POS—no restrictions there.

    If you’re not using automated tip pools but still want tips to show up automatically in Tip Payouts for digital sending, here’s the list of supported POSs: Aloha, Brink, Dinerware, Lightspeed (L-series, U-series, and K-series), Micros (3700 and Simphony II), Oracle Micros Simphony, POSitouch, Qu POS, SpotOn, Squirrel, Square, Silverware, Toast, TouchBistro, HarborTouch Hospitality, Skytab, Future, and Restaurant Manager.

    No supported POS? No problem! You can still use Tip Management by manually declaring tips in 7punches, our Time Clocking app.

  • Tip Management supports automated payroll integrations with ADP Run, ADP Workforce Now, Gusto, and 7shifts Payroll. We can provide CSV export for tip data for ADP Workforce Now, Paylocity, UKG, and Paychex.

    Note: with the Tip Management report, you can still report paid tips to payroll even if you don’t use any of the supported payroll providers.

  • Tips can be shared based on a percentage of total tips or a percentage of net sales. They can be distributed equally based on hours worked, by specific percentages, or by weighted points.

    Note: hours worked is a factor in all distribution methods.

  • By connecting your bank account to 7shifts, you can transfer and reserve your desired amount of funds in 7shifts. After each payout, your float is automatically topped up to ensure the set amount is always available. We recommend keeping 4 days worth of tips in your float to cover weekends and bank holidays. The first time you transfer funds to 7shifts, it takes 2-5 business days for your funds to be processed.

    Next, decide whether your restaurant or employees will cover the $1 transaction fee. Then, invite your tipped employees to enter their debit card information via the free 7shifts mobile app.

    Employees’ tips can be automatically added through a POS integration, 7punches (our time clocking tool), a tip pool, or you can enter them manually. When ready, review the tip amounts, click ‘Pay,’ and the tips are deposited directly into employees’ debit accounts in seconds.

  • No, unless you use 7shifts Payroll and choose to have tips taxed there. You can configure your tip calculation settings if you want to determine whether tips should be reported through payroll integrations or exports.

  • Absolutely! Tip Payouts is an optional aspect of Tip Management, and is not required to use other parts of the feature. By configuring your custom tip calculation logic, you can choose to pay all or partial tips through payroll.
